Rocinha, the largest and most famous favela in Rio de Janeiro, attracts travellers from all over the world, offering a unique insight into Brazilian daily life, full of contrasts and rich cultural diversity. Our agency organises safe and unforgettable tours of Rocinha, allowing visitors not only to admire breathtaking views but also to fully immerse themselves in the life of the local community. The guides we collaborate with are generations-long residents of the favela, providing every participant with an insider’s perspective and a glimpse into the true essence of this extraordinary district.

The tour begins... on a moto-taxi?!

Welcome to Rocinha! Our adventure starts with a ride on a moto-taxi—a licensed and highly popular mode of transport in the favelas. With experienced drivers at the helm, we'll ascend to the top of the favela, where a stunning panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro awaits. This short but exhilarating journey offers an introduction to the daily rhythm of life in Rocinha—dynamic, a little chaotic, but brimming with energy.

Navigating the narrow streets

After reaching the viewpoint, we continue the tour by walking through the narrow, winding alleys. Surrounded by the vibrant life of residents, we will discover places that tell the story of this community—murals, local shops, and often hidden corners that only the guides know how to find. The route involves walking downhill, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a bit of effort.

Connecting with Rocinha’s culture and life

During the walking tour, our guide—a true native of Rocinha—will share insights about daily life in the favela, the district's history, and the challenges and joys that define life here. We will also learn about local artistic and social initiatives, such as cultural centres, art workshops, and capoeira schools. If we’re lucky, we might even witness a brief performance of this traditional Brazilian martial art.

How to behave in the favela

Rocinha is surrounded by many stereotypes, but the guide will clarify what’s true and what’s a myth while advising on how to behave to ensure our visit is both safe and respectful to the local community. You’ll also receive tips on where it’s appropriate to take photos and where it’s better to refrain out of respect for residents’ privacy.

Important information before the tour

The Rocinha tour offers an authentic experience, ideal for adventure seekers open to the local atmosphere. However, participants should ensure they have additional travel insurance covering motorcycle rides. Due to the nature of the route, the tour is not suitable for those afraid of motorbike travel, people with disabilities, or those who feel uncomfortable in narrow spaces.
