Northern Territories of Ghana: Savannah and Tribes
Day 1: Accra, Ghana Arrival
Upon arrival at Accra's Kotoka International Airport, you will be greeted with African drums and music. After a transfer to the hotel, enjoy a welcome dinner at Skybar25, the city's tallest rooftop bar. (Welcome performance for group tours.)
Day 2: Tamale | Mole National Park | Zaina Lodge | Evening Safari
Upon arrival, you'll be whisked to the luxurious Zaina Lodge at Mole National Park. Day 3: African Safari | Mognori Eco Village
Wake up in the heart of the African jungle for a morning foot safari with your guide, offering the chance to see a variety of animals. Afterwards, return to base before departing on a 15km journey on a dirt road to Mognori Eco Village. This flourishing eco-tourism village offers canoe safaris to see monkeys, birds, and crocodiles, tours to learn about shea butter production and traditional medicine, and drumming and dancing performances.
Also, meet with the Local chief and his elders and sub-chiefs. In the evening, enjoy a buffet dinner with performances of the Boma Dance, a traditional northern dance depicting encounters with colonial slave raiders and the fight for freedom. Day 4: Tamale | Gambaga Witches Camp
Embark on a fascinating journey to a unique settlement where individuals accused of witchcraft have found refuge. Exiled from their villages due to accusations related to tragic events such as the death of a teenager, mysterious diseases, or poor harvests, they now live together in a dedicated community. Engage with them as they share their life stories and visit the special shrine that offers protection and spiritual cleansing.
Experience the warmth of their welcome, which starkly contrasts with the gravity of the circumstances that led them to this place. This visit provides an intriguing glimpse into their resilience and the customs that sustain their community.
Day 5: Bolgatanga | Sacred Crocodile Pond
After breakfast, the group will leave for the Paga crocodile pond located at the north-eastern border between Ghana and Burkina Faso, to visit this sacred sanctuary for crocodiles.
Day 6: Bolgatanga | Northern Arts and Crafts
You will visit the African arts and crafts market in Bolgatanga, renowned for its exquisite straw baskets, fans, hats, traditional northern attire, leather goods, metal jewellery, and other unique African crafts. This market offers a rich display of local artisans' talents and provides a wonderful opportunity to find beautiful souvenirs and immerse yourself in the region's vibrant culture.
Day 7: Navrongo | Gurunsi Tribes
After breakfast, you will drive to meet the Gurunsi tribe, renowned for their adobe-fortified buildings adorned with intricate black, red, and white African frescoes. These beautifully decorated structures are a testament to their rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions. This visit offers a unique glimpse into the daily life and craftsmanship of the Gurunsi people, providing a fascinating cultural experience.
Day 8: Wa | Fortified Villages
The Lobi live near Wa in isolated clay houses with high walls, featuring a rectangular granary, rooms, and a cowshed. In Lobi society, the family chief is the sole authority, managing sacrificial shrines and field labour before the elders' council or government. The Lobi are talented artists, creating prestigious statues for spiritual protection, and excelling in music, with many skilled balafon players among them.
Day 9: Accra | Free Day
Return to Accra for reflection and relaxation. Enjoy some leisure time, explore the city, and shop for souvenirs.
Day 10: Cape Coast | Historic Slaves' Castles
Immerse yourself in Ghana's captivating past with a visit to Cape Coast Castle and Elmina castles. The Cape Coast castle, originally built in 1555 as a Portuguese trading post named Cabo Corso and later developed by the Swedish in 1653, played a notable role in the trade of timber and gold before becoming a major hub in the slave trade. Visit to the Elmina Castle, also known as St. George's Castle.
Built by the Portuguese in 1482, this was the first European structure in Sub-Saharan Africa and played a significant role in the region's history. Discover the castle's grounds and rooms, steeped in centuries-old stories and haunting remnants of the past. Elmina Castle is the oldest European building in Africa. At different times the castle has been used as a warehouse to trade gold, ivory, and eventually slaves.
Day 11: Accra | Departure
Your final day in Accra before departure sounds like a perfect blend of reflection and relaxation. Do the city tour and some shopping and relax. Transfer to the airport, reflecting on the rich cultural experiences and memories from your journey through Ghana's hidden gems.
